Overview

Our first stop will be at the Yangon jetty where you can observe the morning activities of the locals by the riverside. Then hop on a local ferry to travel across the river to the scenic town of Dala. The ferry ride is approximately 15 to 30 minutes and offers great views of the waterways.

Upon reaching Dala travel by local trishaw through the town to visit the fish market, fruit/vegetable markets, various villages, and teahouses along the way. You can opt to visit the orphanage there and also see the bamboo homes of the local people.

Afterwards, take a local taxi to Twante (45-minute drive) which is a nearby town specializing in the local pottery industry. On the way you can see the scenic landscape of paddy fields and small pagodas amidst the fields. Arrive at Twante and, after a short break for lunch (own expense), visit some of the interesting pottery workshops to learn about this cottage industry that has been in this area since the 15th Century. You can have a chat with the artisans and get a chance to see the entire process. Other places of attraction in Twante Township are the Shwe Sandaw Pagoda and the Twante Market.

Before heading to Yangon, if time permits, you can also stop at the Snake Temple built in the middle of a lake. The temple is home to around 30 Pythons who are taken care of by the nuns. The nuns at the temple will be most happy to chat with you about their daily lives. Late afternoon, drive back to Dala and transfer by ferryboat to Yangon. On arrival, your private car will be waiting at the jetty to take you to visit the Botataung Pagoda located near the Yangon riverside. Unlike most pagodas, Botatung is hollow and you can walk through it. There’s a gold leaf-coated maze inside with glass showcases containing many of the ancient relics and artifacts. It is believed to house a sacred hair of Lord Buddha. You will find a lively atmosphere around the pagoda & riverside with many local visitors.
