Though the Duomo (as they say in Italian) was built to give glory to God, it stands as a staggering example of human endeavor. It is also known as Milan Cathedral, and this structure of imposing grandeur took more than five centuries to complete – and drained the purses of many past rulers. Millions visit the Duomo each year, it’s a Milanese must-do.
At 108-meters high, 160-meters long, and 92-meters wide, it easily holds 40,000 people. Every inch of it drops with gothic gravitas. Revel in 600-year-old art and adornments, sarcophagi of luminaries from centuries gone by, and countless Renaissance statues. It even has Italy’s largest organ, which has 15,350 pipes.
The building sits on the site of a much more ancient church which ruins still lie underground in the baptistry. Construction of the Duomo di Milano began in 1386, and for more than 500 years, many rulers and rich men attempted to finish this monumental structure. Napoleon arrived in 1805 and even the Little Emperor failed to get it over the line (he also failed to pay for any of the work he ordered done. Classic Napoleon).
Gaze upon treasures of the Renaissance in the nearby Duomo Museum (the ticket gets you in here too). Here, you can learn about the cathedral's 600-year-long history. There’s one curiosity in particular that you might want to check out: the modellone. This is an architectural model of the Duomo itself, one-twentieth its size – that alone took 300 years to complete!
