Sitting on a canal, this former nursing home also features an excellent cafe and a ton of educational activities for children and adults. A day here will not just educate, it will inspire and enlighten as well.
The Hermitage was founded 250 years ago by Catherine the Second - who philosopher Voltaire called the "sparkling star of the North". Known as "Catherine the Great", she was a passionate art lover. Her acquisition of 225 paintings in Berlin was the genesis of the Russian State Museum.
Close collaboration between the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and the Nieuwe Kerk Amsterdam led to the unique situation we have today: a Dutch branch of the Russian State Museum. And so, in fewer than 96 weeks - this former nursing home (and UNESCO World Heritage site) was turned into a museum for artwork from Russia.
With masterpieces from their permanent collection and regularly rotating exhibitions on display - plus opportunity to put your inspiration right to work in one of the many workshops, the Hermitage a perfect destination for the art lover and the aspiring artist alike.
