Highlights/Itinerary

Here are some of the must-visit spots around Hakone:

  • Lake Ashi: A scenic lake at the foot of Mt Hakone which was formed as a result of the volcano’s last eruption 3,000 years ago.
  • Hakone Shrine: Located along the shores of Lake Ashi, featuring two iconic torii gates—one in the lake, and one at Moto-Hakone.
  • Hakone Ropeway: Enjoy the views of the sulfuric Owakudani Valley during a 30-minute gondola ride along the ropeway.
  • Owakudani: Also formed from Mt Hakone’s eruption, Owakudani is an active volcano site which is popular for its hot springs and rivers.
  • Hakone Open Air Museum: An abstract museum which aims to strike a balance between nature and art, this attraction features natural lawns dotted with sculptures and other works of art. Despite its name, there is an indoor arm as well, so don’t miss that!
  • Hakone Venetian Glass Museum: Feast your eyes on this stunning showcase of fine Italian glass art! On display are intricately designed vases, goblets, lamps, sculptures, and more.
  • Gotemba Premium Shopping Outlets: Located at Gotemba city (a short distance from Hakone), this outlet mall sells everything from fashion apparel to household goods and appliances at a bargain.
