Embark on a tour of Bagan to visit the highlights. Start your morning with a visit to the vibrant Nyaung Oo Market: the biggest market in Bagan where you will be able to see trading of local goods. Begin your tour of the iconic Bagan Temples with a visit to Shwezigon Pagoda built in the early 11th Century. The shape of Shwezigon Pagoda went on to become the prototype for many other stupas across Myanmar. Next, visit the Htilominlo Temple, a majestic 3-storey tall temple built in the 11th Century consisting of intricately carved stuccos depicthing mythological animals. Before lunch, make a quick stop at the Khaymingha group of Temples where you can see a cluster of unique pagodas including a leaning temple.
Afterwards, travel to the Ananda Pagoda, Bagan’s best known and most beautiful temple consisting of beautiful glazed plaques. It was one of the first great temples of Bagan and is still well preserved. The temple’s most distinctive feature is the gilded Sikhara, a tower like sphire at the top. A short walk away is the Ananda Oak Kyaung Monastery, this is a brick monastery containing 18th Century paintings depictings the Buddha’s life and elements of the history in Bagan.
After lunch (own expense, head to the Pyramid-shaped Dhammayangi Temple, the largest and most massive of the Bagan Temples consisting of a massive square base topped by six receding terraces. It is infamous for it’s mysterious, bricked up passageways and note-worthy history. You can also visit the Thatbyinnu Temple, a majestic pagoda of 60 meters towering over the plains of Bagan.
Our next stop is at the Myinkaba Village famous for Bagan’s traditional family-owned lacquer-ware workshops. You can visit a workshop, see the process of crafting laquer-ware and have a chat with the village crafting experts. Afterwards, see the Gubyaukgi Temple nearby which contains a large array of well preserved frescoes and some of the oldest paintings in Bagan. To end the day, enjoy a scenic sunset visit near Sulamuni Pagoda or similar sunset viewing point in Bagan.
